Winner of the prize Dance Performance of the Year at Aarets Reumert 2015!
The Royal Ballet Company in the company, CORPUS, has invited director Christian Lollike into the dance laboratory and given him a demanding challenge: He has to direct a dance performance with dancers from The Royal Ballet and Danish war veterans who have been deployed to Afghanistan.
The war in Afghanistan began in 2001 and from the beginning Danish soldiers participated side by side with American and British soldiers. 43 soldiers never went back home to Denmark again. Several hundreds returned with wounded bodies and minds.
One of them was the war veteran Martin:
“Suddenly I was standing there with a loaded gun, which could both save lives and at the same time be lethal. This is a huge responsibility to get as a 22 year old. I thrived with the responsibility on my back because I could make a use of all what I had learned. But I think it has to do with that responsibility that people come home with mental health problems, because it takes a man to cope with such a constant pressure for six months. And when you are sent to war you never have the opportunity to leave such a responsibility. ”
IN CONTACT – a war ballet is choreographed by Corpus’ artistic directors Esther Lee Wilkinson and Tim Matiakis, and besides dancers from The Royal Ballet Danish soldiers deployed in Afghanistan participates in the performance.
