DANCEDYBET invites you inside the city walls of a mysterious community affected by an insurmountable urge to dance. You are invited to dance within the performance. We invite you to dance in protest, to forget, to rejoice, to be part of a community, or maybe because there is no future. Can the we dance us free of the disasters that are continuously pouring down on us?

DANSEDYBET is inspired by real accounts from the Middle Ages about outbreaks of a dancing plague. In several places in Europe, small communities come to a complete standstill because the city’s inhabitants dance non-stop. No one is able to stop them. One theory is that many years of famine and failed harvests trigger an almost psychotic state. The citizens are so mentally worn out by constant crisis that their bodies react by dancing. They simply start a bodily revolution.

DANSEDYBET is an immersive song and dance ritual with inspiration from old, Nordic rites of passage, chain dance and folk songs. While we are in the suggestive movement of the chain, a capella singing leads us into a tale of the outbreak of the dancing plague. The performance features actor and singer Hanne Uldal, classical singer Mathias Monrad Møller, actor and folk and world music singer Nini Julia Bang as well as members of a folk dance troupe – and you. Come dance along until the foundation crumbles.

Director Anne Zacho Søgaard says:

Right now the crises are pouring down on us: Natural disasters, war, pandemics, cancer, inflation, stress, childlessness. We are in a perpetual state of stress. We need to respond physically to conflict situations. Experience together that there is something other than the constant crisis. Come into a new unity against the conflict, let’s get carried away. Just have a look at how people crowd into demonstrations about Gaza, Fridays for Future, Black Lives Matter, rationing in daycare centers.

We invite the audience to dance along in the performance. With dance we can express what we cannot articulate with language. Therefore, dance can become a valve in times of crisis.
