Sort/Hvid moves beyond borders and what you already know. We challenge your opinions and feelings, and we take you places where uncertainty is the reference point.
We create theatre, performances, opera, ballet, sculptures, and virtual works that examine the current social and political issues across genre and form. And through our collaboration with artists, performers, specialists, theatres, festivals and art institutions both at home and abroad we toss and turn current issues in the public debate, which ensures us a dynamic and nuanced understanding and approach to our work with the different pieces and performances.
The theatre was founded in 1972 as CaféTeatret, and has over the years played a central role in Danish theatre. In 2011 Christian Lollike joined as Artistic Director with the ambition to create contemporary performing arts and a theatre with an international outreach. Since then, the theatre has undergone a major artistic change and has become significantly noticed both home and abroad. In May 2014 the theatre changed name to Sort/Hvid, but only half a year later there was a fire in the historic theatre in Skindergade, and the building was damaged for good. Because of this, Sort/Hvid is building a new and larger theatre in the Meatpacking Districts in the heart of Vesterbro, Copenhagen, which is expected to open in 2016.
The theatre has not only produced controversial, political and uncompromising performances, but has also been proactive in relation to new foreign drama and been leading in the development of a new theatrical idiom. Among the works performed are the opera Leaves, the ballet In Contact, the memorial We Are Not Real, performances like The Provocateur and The Doll Party, and plays such as The Transformer, All My Dreams Come True, The Shaft, Manifesto 2083 and Project Agriculture.
Sort/Hvid is a small city theater founded by the City Council and the State. The theater also receives funding from public and private foundations.
Christian Lollike is an internationally acclaimed playwright and stage director. He is educated from The Danish National School of Playwriting at Aarhus Theatre in 2001. In the years 2005 to 2011 he was employed by the Aarhus Theatre as in-house stage director and playwright. From 2008-2011 he was the Curator at Aarhus Festuge. In June 2011 he took over as Artistic Director of the established theatre CaféTeatret (today Sort/Hvid) in the center of Copenhagen, Denmark. With his social commitment and experimental approach to theatre, Lollike has over the last decade established himself as one of the most successful playwrights in Denmark. Lollike is nominated for Aarets Reumert several times and received the award as Playwright of the Year in 2013.
Since August 2018 Mette Bryndum has held the position of Managing Director at Sort/Hvid. More information is coming up…
